Consult with Dr. Polan
Before outfitting you with an oral appliance, we’ll take x-rays and a mold of your teeth. This is to make sure the appliance we’re creating helps promote proper breathing while you sleep, without changing the alignment of your teeth.

Confirm Your Diagnosis
We’ll fit you with your custom made oral appliance to wear while you sleep, to help improve breathing. It looks and feels similar to a mouth guard. Your appliance will feel comfortable all night long because it’s custom-fit to your mouth!

Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when a person routinely stops breathing while they sleep. It often happens dozens (or hundreds) of times each night and can disrupt sleep quality, prevent natural healing, and lead to heart conditions and other life threatening ilness.
An oral appliance looks similar to a sports mouthguard that has an upper and lower piece. It keeps your lower jaw in a forward position. This promotes positive airflow while you sleep, preventing sleep apnea from occurring.
A CPAP device is a nose or face mask worn at night to maintain oxygen flow. It’s the traditional treatment for sleep apnea, but is often cumbersome and difficult for many people to sleep with.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the blockage of an airway while you sleep. Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain’s signals to the body to breathe become disrupted.
Snoring, poor sleep quality, lack of energy and restfulness, lethargy and frequent movement during sleep are all signs of sleep apnea. It can also lead to other health conditions developing.
TMD stand for Temporalmandibular Disorder, where as TMJ just referrs to the Temporalmandibular Joint. Everyone has a TMJ but not everyone has TMD issues. Since these terms are often used synonymosly, we'll know what you mean if you say either one.
Maybe, but we do everything in or power to avoide it. In some severe cases, you may require surgery to fix TMD issues. In many cases, however, TMD and TMJ can be treated and resolved with oral appliances and restorative dentistry.
Our office is located in Beverly, MA but we'll help anyone who is in need regardless of how far away they are. For very far patients telemedicine may be a valid option, though in person is always preferred.
